WetWare BioSystems Receives Small Business Innovation Research Award from the United States Air Force

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – WetWare BioSystems, LLC announces that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the United States Air Force through the AFWERX innovation program.

The Phase I contract will allow WetWare to continue developing novel technologies for the mitigation of neurodegeneration following physical trauma. WetWare’s flagship product - “IRONCROWN” - integrates modern medical technology with existing personal protective equipment, introducing a non-invasive treatment solution for military and civilian applications.

As a first-in-class medical device, IRONCROWN allows for the automated treatment of brain injury within the critical “Golden Hour” after a traumatic event. The device is automatically triggered by accelerations, impacts, or overpressure events significant enough to cause a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

“We see this as an opportunity to transform and modernize the standard of care for TBI,” said Brad Smith, WetWare CEO.

Military healthcare providers regularly treat all severities of TBI throughout the continuum of care. However, there remains a pressing need for a rapid, non-invasive treatment due to TBI’s time-sensitive onset. TBI often results in long-term neurological disability by disrupting the brain’s normal structure and function, which quickly deteriorates following injury. The Defense Health Agency describes non-invasive treatments for TBI as “highly desirable.”

WetWare will deploy SBIR funds to validate IRONCROWN capabilities and continue moving towards clinical applications.
